President Trump is building a team that wants a strong alliance with India

The appointment of Michael Waltz as President Trump’s National Security Advisor and Marco Rubio as Secretary of State marks a pivotal moment for U.S.-India relations. Both leaders are strong advocates for a robust U.S.-India partnership, bringing determined perspectives that align with India’s strategic goals. Their presence in the administration signals an era where India’s interests may find even stronger resonance within the U.S. national security and diplomatic apparatus.

The Trump-Modi Friendship: A Catalyst for Stronger Ties

One of the most unique aspects of the U.S.-India relationship under Trump has been his personal friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This bond has transcended traditional diplomatic niceties, with the two leaders showing mutual respect and admiration for each other’s vision and policies. Their camaraderie, displayed at events like the “Howdy, Modi!” rally in Houston and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad, set a new tone for bilateral relations, fostering warmth and trust rarely seen in international diplomacy.

For India, Trump’s personal rapport with Modi opens doors to more direct dialogue and cooperation, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as defence, trade, and security. Trump has expressed admiration for Modi’s leadership style and his dedication to making India a stronger, more self-reliant nation. This friendship is an asset, as Trump’s supportive stance on Modi’s initiatives reflects an alignment of values and strategies, reinforcing the foundation of U.S.-India cooperation.

Marco Rubio as Secretary of State: A Diplomat for a Stronger Indo-U.S. Alliance

Marco Rubio’s elevation to Secretary of State is another major boon for India. Known for his outspoken support of India and deep commitment to countering China’s influence, Rubio brings a sharp focus on the Indo-Pacific and a solid appreciation for India’s role as a stabilising force in the region. As Secretary of State, Rubio is expected to prioritise strengthening ties with India, likely advancing cooperative frameworks that reinforce India’s role in regional security and promote democratic values.

Rubio has long advocated for closer U.S.-India defence and economic relations, viewing India as a natural partner in promoting peace and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific. His understanding of India’s strategic needs, particularly in light of its border tensions with China, positions him as a proactive ally for India’s defence modernisation and technological advancement. Rubio’s leadership will likely see the U.S. and India coordinating more actively on regional diplomacy, trade, and investment—opening new avenues for joint ventures, infrastructure projects, and energy cooperation that align with India’s growth ambitions.

While speaking to the Senate in 2021 after the Fall of Kabul to the Taliban, Rubio made it clear his position is pro-India. He didn't disguise his feelings towards Pakistan:

“In India — I know there was an announcement that there will be a meeting of the Quad fairly soon, which is a good development — if you’re India you look at this and saying if the United States allowed Pakistan to unravel their standing because the Pakistani role in all this — and multiple administrations are guilty of ignore it — The Pakistani role in enabling the Taliban is ultimately a victory for those pro-Taliban hardliners in the Pakistani government. India has to be looking at this and say, ‘If the United States could have a third-rate power like Pakistan unravel its aims, what chance do they have of confronting China?’

Understanding Michael Waltz’s Vision for India

Michael Waltz’s consistent support for India, particularly his vocal appreciation for India’s role as a counterbalance to China, is a cornerstone of his foreign policy outlook. Waltz has frequently emphasised India’s importance in stabilising the Indo-Pacific region, recognising its role as a democratic powerhouse and a critical economic player. His dedication to fortifying the U.S.-India relationship aligns seamlessly with Trump’s "America First" strategy, particularly in its orientation against China’s growing influence. This approach allows the U.S. to support India's rise as a stabilising force, bolstering both nations' security in an increasingly multipolar world.

Strengthening Defense and Economic Ties

The Trump administration has historically supported bolstered defence ties with India, approving the sale of advanced weaponry and fostering joint military exercises. Waltz’s appointment could further energise these efforts, enhancing India's defence capabilities and supporting its goal to modernise its military forces. Additionally, Waltz’s strategic acumen may foster even deeper cooperation in cybersecurity and intelligence sharing, recognising India's role in countering regional security threats and preserving the integrity of global digital infrastructure.

On the economic front, a Trump administration under Rubio’s diplomatic leadership and Waltz’s strategic vision may seek to unlock greater trade potential between the two nations. Rubio’s commitment to reducing trade barriers and encouraging American businesses to invest in India aligns with India's Make in India initiative. Such initiatives could encourage American businesses to choose India as an alternative to China for manufacturing and technological investments, a shift that would further cement India’s position as a preferred partner.

A Shared Vision in the Indo-Pacific

The Trump administration's Indo-Pacific strategy, a counterweight to China's expansionism, has been marked by its support for a free, open, and rules-based order in the region. Michael Waltz has championed the Quad alliance (comprising the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia), viewing it as a mechanism for countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. Similarly, Marco Rubio’s understanding of India’s critical role in this alliance will translate into stronger diplomatic and military support from the U.S., furthering India’s capacity to project power and secure its interests in the region.

Shared Democratic Values

Beyond strategic considerations, the U.S.-India relationship under Waltz's and Rubio’s guidance is likely to reflect shared democratic values. Both Trump, Waltz, and Rubio recognise that India's vibrant democracy is essential not just for the region but also as a model of stability and resilience. This perspective fosters a genuine alignment of interests, as the U.S. supports India's rise as a global leader while respecting its autonomy and sovereignty.

Trump is good for India

The Trump administration’s renewed commitment to strengthening ties with India under Michael Waltz as NSA and Marco Rubio as Secretary of State presents a momentous opportunity. With a strategic focus on defence, economic cooperation, and shared democratic values, this partnership holds the promise of mutual growth and enhanced regional stability. Waltz’s and Rubio’s presence as known India supporters at the helm of Trump’s team, combined with Trump’s enduring friendship with Prime Minister Modi, could be the catalyst for an even stronger U.S.-India alliance. Together, they create a partnership that reflects shared goals, respects sovereignty, and works towards a secure, prosperous Indo-Pacific.
