The India-USA defence partnership has grown significantly over the past few decades, evolving from a period of ambivalence and occasional friction to one of strategic cooperation. With this essay I will endeavour to explore the historical context, current status, and future prospects of this important partnership.
The defence relationship between India and the USA has its roots in the Cold War era. During this period, India's non-aligned stance and its inclination towards the Soviet Union for military hardware led to a lukewarm relationship with the United States. However, the end of the Cold War and the disintegration of the Soviet Union provided an opportunity for both countries to reassess their strategic priorities.

The United States has become one of the top arms suppliers to India, with notable sales including advanced aircraft, artillery, and naval equipment. Joint military exercises have also become a cornerstone of the partnership. Exercises like Malabar, Yudh Abhyas, and Vajra Prahar are not just platforms for training but also for strategic messaging.
The strategic partnership is heavily influenced by the geopolitical context, particularly the rise of China and its assertive policies in the Indo-Pacific region. The USA views India as a key player in its Indo-Pacific strategy, while India seeks to balance Chinese aggression and protect its strategic interests. Additionally, the partnership is not without its complexities. India's historical commitment to strategic autonomy means it often treads a fine line between deepening its defence ties with the U.S. and maintaining relationships with other key players like Russia.
